Coroner identifies 17-year-old who died in shooting

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) - The Vanderburgh County Coroner's Office has identified the 17-year-old who died in a shooting on Evansville's south side.

Chief Deputy Coroner Steve Lockyear says Deviante Gaines lived in the 2800 block of Lodge Avenue, where the shooting occurred.

An autopsy has been scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Police believe three or four other people were with Gaines when shots rang out at the apartment around noon Monday.

Witnesses told police those people ran away when officers started pulling in.

At least 15 squad cars responded to the apartment complex with officers guarding the front door while crews canvassed the scene.

Police still don't know why someone opened fire and they are searching the area for those people that ran away.

A large crowd had gathered outside the apartment as police continued to investigate the shooting.

"They feel like they've lost a member of their community and that's understandable," says Sgt. Jason Cullum.  "We have met with the family members and explained the process to them so they don't feel like they're being left out of the information loop.  This can be a very frustrating time for the family and loved ones because it takes a while."

Police are asking anyone who was in the apartment building or the area to contact investigators.
