EMS Person of the Year recognized in Boonville

BOONVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

A special award for a woman who has been serving the region for three decades.

Karen Payne of St. Mary's Warrick EMS has been awarded EMS Person of the Year by the American Legion Post in Boonville.

She then went on to win state honors.

On Wednesday night, the Boonville American Legion publicly recognized Payne for the honor.

"I know I'm an oddity,” Payne told us.  “Most people don't stay in EMS this long, but I really do like what I do.  I jokingly tell everyone, I don't know what I want to be when I grow up but I really enjoy what I do, so I've decided to stay in this career."

Payne has been a first responder for 31 years now.
