Gibson Southern student to attend leadership forum in Washington, D.C.

A local high school senior will be making a trip to Washington, D.C. to serve as a senator.

Caleb Kifer will be a senior at Gibson Southern this fall, and he's been selected as a senator for the American Legion Boys Nation.

Boys Nation is an annual American Legion program that focuses on civic training, leadership development, and the political process on the federal level.

Kifer will be one of just two students from Indiana making the trip.

“We'll set up and run a federal government,” he told us.  “So we'll elect a president, a vice president, and all the cabinet members.  As part of the application to be a senator, we each had to write a bill to take.  So I wrote a bill.  We will debate it, and vote on it.”

And Kifer tells us that they will not only meet their respective state senators, but they could also get to meet President Barack Obama, if he's available.
