New bill aimed at restructuring Indiana’s criminal justice system

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

An $80 million bill aimed at restructuring Indiana's criminal justice system just became law.

It went into effect Wednesday and it's designed to rehabilitate nonviolent offenders.

The law gives jails, mental health facilities, and court systems the ability to apply for grants to handle more low-level offenders.

That way people with drug addictions and mental health problems stay out of prisons, and receive help at the local level.
