MADISONVILLE, KY (WFIE) - One historic building in Madisonville that has stood vacant for years is finally getting revitalized.
The Woolworth building has stood at the heart of downtown Madisonville for decades, but for much of the last 10 years it has been completely empty and rundown.
That's all about to change though as renovations have started to remake the two-story building into a state-of-the art fitness center.
The national franchise Workout Anytime will be a new premium gym in Madisonville with early enrollment offers as low $15.
The manager of the gym, J.P. Wilson, purchased the building over a year ago to rescue it from possibly getting torn down.
The building is currently going through a complete remodel and basically is starting from scratch, with brand new floors, walls and new roof. Wilson, however, still wants to keep some of the historic character of this building.
He plans to preserve the decorative tin ceiling on the first floor as well as re-staining and exposing portions of the building's original brick wall.
Wilson says remembering the history of this landmark is not only important to him but to the whole community.
"They want the gym, but they really like the fact that we're going to preserve it, and they like the history of it and they're really getting involved," said Wilson. "We've had several people stop by and just tell their story about what this building kind of meant to them."
Wilson plans to have the grand opening for Workout Anytime on July 10th, to line up with Friday Night Live.
