Mt. Vernon library preparing for a makeover

The librarians at the Alexandria Public Library in Mt. Vernon are preparing their home for a makeover this summer. The expansions and the renovations are scheduled to begin in June.

Marissa Priddis, the library director, tells 14NEWS the work will be done in phases.

"Phase one is going to be the staff areas," says Priddis, "and then, after that, we are going to renovate the youth area, then the adult area, and then the meeting rooms."

The phases will focus on updating the technology in the library but they will not affect the business at the library. Priddis says the library will remain open throughout the entire process and it will continue to conduct the summer programs.

"We have actually rented a classroom in Hedges to do some of our smaller programming and then we've partnered with Parks and Rec to use their community center for all of our big programming," says Priddis.

The $1.8 million project is being funded completely by the library.

"We've actually been scrimping and saving for years," says Priddis. "We knew back in the early 2000s that the technology was lagging behind so we have been trying to save as many nickels and dimes as we can."

Priddis hopes to have the project finished in December.
