Hopkins Co. school wins first place prize, grant money for wellness program

HOPKINS CO., KY (WFIE) - A Hopkins County elementary school just won a big grant for its wellness program, as well as a new playground.

Southside Elementary School in Nortonville was part of a nationwide competition for a $30,000 grant from "Discovery Education".

They came in first out of 400,000 schools across the country.

First grade teacher, Christy Estrada, submitted the application for the contest.

She can't believe their tiny school won.

"The kids are excited, they can't wait, they're more excited about the playground than they are about the curriculum we're going to buy, that we're going to have to teach and implement in the classrooms, but they're excited," says Estrada.

The new playground will be built before the start of school in the fall.

They also plan on using some of the grant money to update their current playground.
