Bridge on Pennyrile Parkway to be named in honor of Vietnam veteran

HANSON, KY (WFIE) -

A Vietnam veteran will be honored by having a bridge on the Pennyrile Parkway named in his honor.

Sergeant William Michael Coomes was killed 1966, just weeks before he was scheduled to return home to Madisonville.

A Pennyrile Parkway overpass will officially be named the "Sergeant William Coomes" Memorial Bridge in a ceremony on June 6.

The Joseph Eddie Ballard Western Kentucky Veterans Center will host the unveiling.

"To me it sends a good message out knowing that the ones that have fought for our freedom that we're honoring them. I mean you go to think these people fight on a daily basis and they still are to this day to keep our freedom, so we want to honor them in any possible way that we can," said Tyler Rummage, Veterans Center Asst. Administrator.

Kentucky State Senator C.B Emry, who helped secure the sign, will attend the unveiling. Others who helped make the sign a reality and members of Coomes' family were also invited.
