LST played pivotal role in WWII

Friday marks the 70th anniversary of Germany's surrender in World War II.

That surrender was due in part to the LST ships, including the LST 325 that is moored in Evansville.

The LST was open for tours Friday.

The ship played a big role towards the end of the war, most notably in the battle of Normandy, less than a year before the German surrender.

According to the crew, without these ships, we would not be celebrating Victory in Europe Day.

"The war would have lasted a lot longer, and part of our job is to keep history alive and fresh in the mind of the young folks, as a reminder that they are free today thanks to the men that served on these kinds of ships and other ships,” said Robert Pointer, a crew member.

The LST 325 is open for tours on Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sundays from Noon to 4 p.m.
