USI baseball wins 10th straight, clinch tournament berth

The University of Southern Indiana baseball team hit four home runs and won its 10th-straight game with a 12-3 victory over the University of Illinois Springfield in the 2015 regular season finale Sunday afternoon in Springfield, Illinois. The Screaming Eagles end the regular season with a 26-19 overall and 21-15 in the GLVC, while the Prairie Stars finished season 22-28, 16-20 GLVC.

USI finishes second in the GLVC East Division by winning 18 of its last 24 conference games after starting the league campaign 3-9 and in last place in the division. The Eagles also won their last eight-straight conference games to secure second and earn the spot in the GLVC Tournament.

The seedings and pairings for the GLVC Tournament, which will be May 7-10 at Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana, will be announced Sunday evening.

In the victory, USI scored 11 times in the first four innings, including a five-run fourth inning, to take an 11-0 lead. The Eagles also added a run in the seventh in cruising to the 12-3 victory.

Junior right fielder Kyle Kempf (Evansville, Indiana) led the Eagles' 16 hit attack by going three-for-four with four RBIs, two runs scored, and two home runs. The two round trippers brings Kempf's season total to a career-high and team-best seven this spring.

In addition to Kempf's blasts, junior first baseman Andrew Cope (Evansville, Indiana) crushed his fifth home run of the season, while junior shortstop Kyle Niemeier (Evansville, Indiana) hit his first home run of the season and his career.

On the mound, senior right-hander pitcher Matt Chavarria (Carlsbad, New Mexico) posted his team-best seventh win of the year. Chavarria (7-3) went the first three innings, permitting one hit and striking out two, in a staff day for the Eagles.
