Local Vietnam veterans return to home to a warm welcome

27 Vietnam veterans are home after a bus trip to Washington, DC.

The group departed from Newburgh on Tuesday morning to visit our nation's capital and to see the Vietnam Memorial. The majority of the veterans had never been to the memorial and the organizers with Point Man of Newburgh International Ministries thought that they deserved to stand beside it.

It was an experience of a lifetime for these men and, they say, they enjoyed every part of it.

"It was just such a special time when these young high school and middle school students would come and talk to us," says an organizer and veteran, Dan Oates, "and thank us for our service so that was very special for many of the guys."

"They had kids coming up to us and shaking our hands," says veteran Russ Jones, "and saying thank you for your service and we are glad that you are home safe. They were not prompted to do that."

The organizers say, if there is a need, they would like to make arrangements for a second bus trip to the Vietnam Memorial.
