BLOOMINGTON, IN (WFIE) - Construction is now underway on the next section of Interstate 69 from Evansville to Indianapolis.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held Wednesday.
Section 5 will run from Bloomington to Martinsville and should be complete by the end of next year.
Last year, the Indiana Finance Authority announced it sold more than $240 million in bonds to pay for the project.
The section will run along State Road 37.
A bill that would allow the possibility of directing Section 6 through southern Marion County was signed into law earlier this month.
Environmental studies are expected to take up to three years. But there is no funding source in place for construction of the final section.
I-69 is currently open from Evansville to Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center.
