Three communities earn recognition as Azalea Cities

A trio of Tri-State cities earned recognition as certified Azalea Cities.

Mt. Vernon, Princeton, and Petersburg received the award from the Azalea Society of America.

The agency recognizes cities that have public and private displays of Azaleas and have events to promote the flower.

Members of the Mt. Vernon Azalea Trail committee say this award will bring more people to the area.

"This is a step towards looking to the future to bring more people in, to enjoy the beauty of our city, and the other cities that also received the award," says Marcie Miller.

They estimate they had around 300 Azaleas around town when they started, but now have more than 1400.
