EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) - Children in Marvin Smith's first grade class at Lincoln Elementary School will get to grow their own food this spring.
Thanks to contributions made by several local businesses surrounding Lincoln, a tower garden has been purchased.
On Wednesday, Mr. Smith's students began planting fruits and vegetables.
The tower garden is an aeroponic growing system that Smith will use as a hands-on tool to educate and literally feed students organic vegetables.
"It's a great opportunity for children to understand how things grow and also understand the importance of good nutrition because the tower garden is completely organic," says Billy Holder, Juice Plus Distributor.
"I hope they pass the information along to their families and continue these things throughout their life," Smith adds.
The plants will begin to sprout in a week or so, and after about six weeks, they will be ready to harvest and eat.
