Mother thanks first responders after accident

GIBSON CO., IN (WFIE) - A picture of a little girl wearing a firefighter's helmet has reached thousands on the 14 News facebook page. It was taken by our media partner minutes after the little girl and her family were involved in a car accident in Gibson County.

The accident occurred on Monday and, on Tuesday, the mother wanted to thank the first responders.

She says she was able to stay calm because the first responders were able to keep her five children calm after the accident on Monday evening. It happened at the intersection of Highway 41 and Richland Creek Drive.

Savannah Nelson and her five children were on their way to get their dad from work. Nelson needed medical attention but her children were uninjured and in good hands thanks to the first responders.

The man in the picture is Captain Kevin McKannan with the Princeton Fire Department. He says he did not do anything special but Nelson disagrees with him.

"He took care of [my daughter] like she was his own child," says Nelson, "and that is what is amazing about these people and these firefighters. They will do anything to keep the children calm and make sure they are happy and comfort them and everything. The man was so sweet. She just loved him and she thought it was so cool that she got to wear his helmet. So cute, yes, it was so cute."

Nelson saved the picture of the man who, she says, helped to save the day.
