Eagles celebrate Senior Day with 90-65 victory
The University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team completed a Senior Day celebration with a 90-65 victory over Saint Joseph's College Saturday afternoon at the Physical Activities Center. USI, which has won seven-straight games and eight of its last nine contests, goes to 19-6 overall and 12-5 in the GLVC, while Saint Joseph's sees its record go to 6-21, 3-14 GLVC.
After the teams traded buckets to start the game, the Screaming Eagles methodically pulled away from the Pumas in the finals 15 minutes of the opening half. USI took total control in the final 7:41 before the intermission when they went on an 18-6 run to lead 49-27. Senior guards TeNale Roland (New Albany, Indiana) and Gavin Schumann (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the opening half offensive surge with 17 points and 11 points, respectively.
USI, as a team, was a blistering 65.5 percent from the field (19-29), and 58.3 percent from beyond the three-point arc (7-12). The Eagles also outrebounded the Pumas, 20-11.
The Pumas made a run at the Eagles in the second half, cutting the 22-point halftime advantage to seven points, 53-46, with 11:57 remaining in the game. USI re-took command using defense, holding Saint Joseph's without a bucket for four minutes as it rebuilt the lead to 19 points, 65-46, with 7:38 left in the game.
The Eagles would go on to extend the lead to as many as 29 points, 88-61, before settling for the 90-65 victory. The 90-point effort was the first for USI since December 16 when the Eagles defeated Salem International, 97-71, and only their third of the season.
Individually, USI had five players reach double-digits in the scoring column. Roland finished the game with a team-high 20 points, followed by Schuman with 16 points. Junior forward Shane Seniour (Newburgh, Indiana) was third, recording his second double-double of the year with a season-high 15 points to go with a game-high 11 rebounds, while sophomore guard Bobo Drummond (Peoria, Illinois) and junior guard Travis Britt (Rantoul, Illinois) rounded out the leading scorers with 13 points and 10 points, respectively.
Overall, USI outrebounded Saint Joseph's, 40-31, and shot 57.4 percent (35-61) from the field, 54.5 percent from long range (12-22).
The Eagles finish the 2014-15 regular season schedule February 26 at 7 p.m. (CST) when they travel to play third-ranked Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky. The Knights, who are 23-2 overall and 15-1 in the GLVC, play the sixth-ranked University of Indianapolis this evening in Louisville.
USI has one more game remaining at the friendly surroundings of the Physical Activities in 2014-15. The Eagles are slated to host a GLVC Tournament first round game March 1 against an opponent that is still to be determined. Tip-off for the GLVC Tournament game at the PAC is scheduled to be 2 p.m.
