Large storm dumps a foot or more of snow on northern Indiana

PLYMOUTH, IN (AP) -

A winter storm has dumped a foot or more of snow on parts of far northern Indiana and created power outages for thousands of homes and businesses.

The National Weather Service says 12.5 inches of snow were reported Sunday in the city of Plymouth. Elkhart and several other northern Indiana communities reported about a foot of snow on the ground and hazardous road conditions.

Up to about 16 inches of snow were forecast over far northern Indiana, with significantly smaller amounts over north-central Indiana.

Northern Indiana Public Service Co. says about 6,300 of its customers remained without power Sunday evening after overburdened tree limbs damaged power lines.

Meteorologist Brentley Lothamer says the storm will push east of Indiana overnight, but it will be replaced by a wave of frigid air.
