EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) - The University of Evansville women's basketball team (10-9, 5-3) received a game-high 27 points from guard Sara Dickey but it wasn't enough as the Purple Aces lost at home to the Drake Bulldogs 79-62 on Sunday afternoon.
Guard Khristian Hart also totaled 16 points for UE as the Aces have now lost back to back games for the first time since Dec. 21, 29 (at IUPUI, at #7 Louisville).
Drake (12-6, 7-0) remained undefeated in Missouri Valley Conference play with 20 points from forward Lizzy Wendell and double-doubles by guard Maddy Dean (23 pts, 16 rebs) and forward Becca Jonas (18 pts, 12 rebs).
The visiting Bulldogs started the game by scoring the opening seven points. UE rallied back when Dickey went on a personal 4-0 run to pull within three.
Drake then rebuilt a larger lead, 13-4, by netting the next six points of the game. Once again, Evansville had an answer by scoring eight consecutive points to trail 13-12 with 15:00 left in the opening half. During the stretch, Hart hit a three as guard Kat Taylor rattled off five points in a row for the Aces.
Up by one, Drake then tallied six straight points for a 21-14 edge. Evansville pushed back another time by scoring the next six points only to see Drake end the opening half on a 17-3 run and claim a 38-23 advantage. Dean had a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds in the opening half. Dickey led UE with eight points in the first half. Taylor scored all seven of her points in the opening stanza.
Out of the break, the Bulldogs extended the lead at 49-32 with a Wendell jumper at the 15:45 mark of the second half. Evansville would bring the second-half deficit down to 10 on four separate occasions. The Aces went on a 12-5 stretch, capped on a three from guard Laura Friday to trail just 54-44 with 11:56 remaining. Evansville was behind as little as 10 with 5:15 to play but Drake would hold on to the double digit lead the remainder of the game for a 79-62 victory.
UE shot 51.7% on field goals in the second half, compared to just 26.5% in the opening stanza. The Aces finished 5-for-22 beyond the arc, the team's second lowest percentage this season. Dickey was 10-of-20 from the floor in the game. Hart ended the evening 7-for-18.
The Aces begin a three game roadtrip on Sunday, Feb. 1 at Indiana State. The game will be held at the Hulman Center in Terre Haute, Ind. and begin at 1:00 p.m. CT.
Evansville is back at home on Friday, Feb. 13 when the Aces host the Southern Illinois Salukis. The tip is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Ford Center.
