Wendell Ford's passion for aviation pays off for Owensboro

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -

Former U.S. Senator Wendell Ford served on the Aviation Subcommittee in Congress, and much of the safety that passengers enjoy today came out of legislation initiated by Ford.

But he never forgot his hometown. Years ago, Ford saw the need for a control tower in Owensboro.

For his efforts on getting the 8,000 foot runway, the Wendell Ford Airfield is named after the Senator.

“Even though he went out of office, he was still highly respected in aviation and the federal government and he enabled us to finish that project and we'll always be grateful for that,” said Former Airport Board Member, Brenda Clayton.

Ford was also instrumental in getting the greater Cincinnati airport for northern Kentucky and UPS for the Louisville airport.
