Remembering Wendell Ford: Retiring from office (1998)

KENTUCKY (WFIE) -

Former 14NEWS Anchor, David James, visited Washington DC in 1998 as Ford was preparing for his final days in office.

He talked about growing up in the small town of Thruston, KY and his passion for helping veterans and coal miners.

He was thought of by many as a statesman, willing to compromise when it came to making policy decisions. He talked about that and his admiration for Kentucky politician, Henry Clay, who shared those values.

“You have to give up something that hurts, and I have to give up something that hurts,” Ford told us in the 1998 interview. “Clay said when we arrive at that decision to compromise, I'm willing then to sign a social contract which will then pass the legislation."

Ford also sat down with 14NEWS Anchor Brandon Bartlett in 2014 as he celebrated his 90th birthday.
