Labor unions challenge Hardin County right-to-work law

FRANKFORT, KY (AP) -  A group of labor unions have filed a federal lawsuit to stop a right-to-work ordinance in Hardin County.

Hardin County is one of several western Kentucky counties that have passed local laws recently making it illegal for employers to require their workers to join a labor union.

Advocates say the law will make the county more attractive to businesses and create jobs. But opponents say it is designed to crush labor unions and lower wages.

The counties are the first in the nation to pass local right-to-work laws after similar efforts have failed at the state and national level. Twenty-four states have right-to-work laws, including three that border Kentucky.

At issue is whether local governments have the authority to pass such laws.
