Dawson Springs man facing lotto fraud charges

DAWSON SPRINGS, KY (WFIE) - Dawson Springs Police say a convenience store employee was printing and cashing hundreds of lottery tickets.

Police say they were called after managers of the Minit-Mart store noticed a large number of lotto payouts.

41-year-old Gerome Smith is facing nearly 300 counts of lottery fraud, unlawful access to a computer, and theft by unlawful taking of more than $10,000.

"It's very unusual, Dawson is a nice, small town, we really don't have a lot of crime here, it actually amazed us when we got the call from the store to investigate it," says Jonathan Sholar, Dawson Springs Police Chief.

Police as well as the Kentucky Lottery are investigating.

Officials say there could still be more charges still to come.
