Makanda woman found dead after more than 1 year

MAKANDA, Ill. (AP) -

Residents and officials in Makanda are shocked that it took more than a year for the death of a 63-year-old woman to be discovered.

Sunantha Simmons was found dead in the garage of her Makanda home last Thursday. Her body was discovered by relatives visiting from Japan. Jackson County Coroner Dr. Thomas Kupferer says she died of natural causes and no foul play is suspected.

Simmons lived alone and hadn't been checked on in over a year. The grass in her yard had grown more than a foot high and her front porch was littered with debris and various items.

One of her neighbors says she wishes she had known Simmons better. She says members of the community should make a better effort to check on each other.
