Lorraine Park to get new shelter house

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) - A generous donation will go toward building a new shelter house at Lorraine Park.

The Evansville Parks Foundation says it received $25,000 from the Thomas A. and Sharon K. Ruder Foundation.

Thomas Ruder grew up in the Lorraine Park neighborhood and says he wanted to give back to his community.

Ruder says the pool was installed in the park when he was 12-years-old. That pool is where he learned to swim and became his oasis when he was a kid.

He says he was able to make the swim team at the pool and was a big part of his childhood. Now he hopes this donation will help other kids love the park.

The donation, plus $10,000 raised from the Parks Foundation's Evening on the River, will help build the new shelter.

According to the Foundation, Thomas Ruder grew up in the Lorraine neighborhood and wants to see the park thrive and grow.

The old shelter house will be torn down in the spring.  The new one should be complete by fall 2015.
