Eagles withstand OVU charge and win, 84-83


The University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team survived a second half charge by Ohio Valley University and got back on track with an 84-83 victory Saturday at the Bellarmine Classic in Louisville, Kentucky. USI goes to 6-1 overall, while Ohio Valley sees its record go to 0-7 to start the year.
The Screaming Eagles sputtered at the start for the second-straight game, spotting the Fighting Scots an eight-point lead, 14-6, with 15:59 left in the opening half. The USI offensive engine began to fire after the first media timeout, going on an 18-11 run to erase the deficit and take a 24-22 lead at the 10:05 mark. Junior forward George Edwards(Chicago, Illinois) came off the bench to spark the rally, scoring eight points.
The Eagles and the Fighting Scots would trade leads for the next five minutes when USI went on an 18-6 run to take control of the game,48-37, with 1:29 remaining to the intermission. Senior guard TeNale Roland (New Albany, Indiana) ignited the commanding run with eight points, while Edwards dropped in six.
USI would push the lead to 11-points once more in the first half, 50-39, before settling for the 52-42 halftime advantage.
In the second half, it was the Fighting Scots turn to make the runs and wiped out the Eagles' 10-point halftime advantage. OVU would rally and retake the lead, 65-64 with 10:01 to play in the contest. Then it was a race to the finish as the lead would change hands 10 times in the finals 10 minutes.
USI would take the lead for good with 3:05 left when Roland hit the second of his back-to-back-to-back three-point field goals to give the Eagles an 81-78 margin. Roland, who scored USI's final 12 points, would seal the victory with an old fashion three-point play with 1:57 left, giving the Eagles an 84-80 lead.
OVU would make one last run at USI, cutting the Eagles advantage to 84-83. Eagles junior forward Shane Seniour(Newburgh, Indiana) took away the Fighting Scots final chance by taking a charge in the lane to preserve the 84-83 win.
Individually, Roland led three Eagles in double-figures with a season-high 27 points. He scored 15 of his 27 points in the second half by hitting five-of-seven from the field, three-of four from downtown, and two-of-two from the charity stripe.
Edwards followed Roland with 20 points, his fifth game of the season with 20-or-more points. He was eight-of-13 from the field and four-of-five at the line, while grabbing six boards.
Senior guard Gavin Schumann (Cincinnati, Ohio) rounded out the double-figure scorers with 12 points.
As a team, USI was outrebounded for the first time this season, 35-31. Senior forward Austin Davis (Freeport, Illinois) led the Eagles on the glass with seven rebounds.
USI returns to the friendly surroundings of the Physical Activities Center Tuesday at 7 p.m. when it concludes the 2014 calendar by hosting Salem International University. The Tigers, who are 1-7 overall and will be making their first visit to the PAC, broke a seven-game losing streak on Saturday when they defeated Bluefield State University, 99-86.
