Eagles rally but fall short versus #3 Moccasins

LOUISVILLE, KY (WFIE) -

The University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team saw its second half rally stall as it fell to third-ranked Florida Southern College, 91-80, Friday night at the Bellarmine Classic in Louisville, Kentucky. USI, who received votes for the top 25 poll this week, falls for the first time this season and goes to 5-1 overall, while Florida Southern sees its record go to 7-0 to start the year.

The Screaming Eagles could not get on track during the first five minutes of the game, missing their only two shots and fell behind 12-0. The Moccasins snaked their way to that game-opening 12-point lead by hitting five-of-their-first seven attempts.

USI would battle back to cut the lead to five points twice, 19-14 and 25-20, before Florida Southern's defense clamped down. Florida Southern would take command of the contest in the final eight minutes of the opening half, outscoring USI, 32-16, and took a 57-35 lead into the locker room at the intermission. The Eagles also committed six of their 11 first half turnover in the final eight minutes.

After halftime, the Eagles woke up from their sluggish first half to cut the Moccasins lead to seven points, 63-56, with 11:16 to play in the game. USI senior guard Gavin Schumann (Cincinnati, Ohio) led USI's 21-6 run in the first nine minutes of the second half with 11 points.

USI would cut Florida Southern's advantage to seven points three more times, but could not get by that plateau. The final time the Eagles would close the gap to seven points was with 3:10 left, 85-78.

A key to the USI second half rally came on the glass as the Eagles outrebounded the Moccasins, 30-16, compared to the 23-20 deficit in the opening 20 minutes. The Eagles finished the contest with a 50-39 advantage on the boards.

Individually, junior forward George Edwards (Chicago, Illinois) led four Eagles in double-figures with 25 points. Edwards, who had 21 second half points, was six-of-12 from the field and 13-of-15 from line, while completing his fourth double-double of the year with a game-high 15 rebounds.

Schumann followed Edwards in the scoring column with 17 points, 12 in the second half. Senior forward Austin Davis(Freeport, Illinois) and senior guard TeNale Roland (New Albany, Indiana) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 points and 10 points, each.

USI concludes Bellarmine Classic action Saturday night at 4 p.m. (CST) when it takes on Ohio Valley University in Louisville. Ohio Valley, which is 0-5, plays host and second-ranked Bellarmine in the second game Friday night.
