Schumann and Edwards combine for 54 in USI win

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

University of Southern Indiana men's basketball senior guard Gavin Schumann and junior forward George Edwards combined for 54 points to lead the Screaming Eagles to an 85-74 victory over Kentucky State University Saturday afternoon at the Physical Activities Center. USI soars to 3-0 overall in the five-game homestand, while KSU sees its record go to 1-2.
 
Schumann posted a game-high and career-high 33 points on 11-of-14 from the field and 11-of-14 from the charity stripe. Edwards followed with his second-straight double-double, scoring 21 points, hitting eight-of-16 from the field and five-of-nine from the line, and grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds.
 
In the opening half, the Eagles controlled the opening tip and built three six-point leads through the first 13 minutes. The Thorobreds rallied with a 13-6 run to briefly take the lead, 26-25, with 7:26 left before halftime.
 
USI would regain control, using a 20-11 run in the final seven minutes before the intermission and took a 45-37 lead into the locker room. Schumann had 17 points at the intermission, connecting on seven-of-nine shots and three-of-six from the line, while Edwards followed closely with 14 points on five-of-seven from the field and four-of-six from the line.
 
In the second half, USI methodically build a 12-point advantage, 59-47, with just under 13 minutes remaining. The Eagles would extend the margin to as many as 13 points, 85-72, before settling for the 85-74 win.
 
For the game, USI outrebounded KSU, 39-22, and shot 49.1 percent from the field (28-57).
 
The Eagles conclude their season-opening five-game homestand after Thanksgiving when they host the Bill Joergens Memorial Classic November 28-29 at the Physical Activities Center. The eighth annual classic features USI, 10th-ranked Bellarmine University, Indiana University East, and Cedarville University.  Game times for next Friday and Saturday are 5:15 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. USI is slated to play the 7:30 p.m. contest each evening.
