Officials: 1 EIU student dead, 1 injured in crash

MATTOON, IL - Authorities say an Eastern Illinois University student is dead and another injured after a weekend pickup truck crash.

Illinois State Police say the accident occurred Saturday evening near the U.S. Route 45 interchange of Interstate 57 south of Mattoon. The pickup truck was heading northbound when it went off the road and overturned.

The driver was ejected from the truck and hospitalized for injuries in Urbana. The passenger was partially ejected and later died from injuries.

Authorities say neither was wearing a seatbelt.

An EIU faculty member told the Mattoon Journal-Gazette (
