VANDERBURGH CO., IN (WFIE) - The University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team tipped off 2014-15 regular season campaign with 28-point, 82-54 victory over Davis & Elkins College Saturday afternoon at the Physical Activities Center.
USI begins the year with a victory for the 29th-straight season and wins its 31st-straight home opener.
The Screaming Eagles soared out to the early 17-3 lead before six minutes were gone in the contest. USI senior guard Gavin Schumann led the initial charge by scoring six points of the 17 points.
USI (1-0) would go into the locker room with 43-27 advantage after extending the first half lead to as many as 20 points, 43-23, with 2:07 left before halftime. Senior guard TeNale Roland and Schumann sparked the Eagles during the first half with 12 points and 11 points, respectively.
In the second half, USI would push the margin to as many as 28 points twice, including the 82-54 final score. The Eagles finished the game by winning the battle on the boards, 39-30, and outshooting Davis & Elkins, 48.3 percent (29-60) to 38.9 percent (21-54). USI also shot well from the line, hitting 81.0 percent (17-21) from the charity stripe.
Individually, Schumann would lead three Eagles in double-digit scoring, hitting for a game-high 22 points. Roland followed Schumann with 17 points, while junior forward George Edwards rounded out the double-digit scorers with 14 points. USI junior forward Shane Seniour led the Eagles with eight rebounds with Edwards following with seven boards.
USI continues its five-game homestand Thursday when it hosts Shorter University for a 7 p.m. contest.
