Balentine named to Lou Henson award watch list

University of Evansville junior D.J. Balentine has been named to the Lou Henson Award Watch List on Wednesday as a member of the Lou Henson Preseason All-America Team.

The Lou Henson Award is presented annually to the Division I "Mid-Major" Player of the Year.

Balentine has established himself as one of the top players in the country, ranking in the top ten in scoring in the NCAA last season with 22.8 points per game.  The All-MVC First Teamer from a year ago has shown that his scoring touch is here to stay.  Over the course of Evansville's two preseason contests, the Kokomo, Ind. native averaged 23 points per game to lead the team.

The award is named in honor of Henson who retired after a spectacular coaching career that lasted 41 years. When he left the game in 2005 he was sixth all-time in career Division I wins with 779. He is the winningest coach at both Illinois and New Mexico State. He is one of only 12 coaches in the history of the game to take two schools to the Final Four.

Evansville is one of three Missouri Valley Conference schools to have a player appear on the list.  Joining Balentine are UNI's Seth Tuttle and Tekele Cotton of Wichita State.  Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet of the Shockers were named to the Lute Olson Award Watch List.

The 2015 recipient will be announced at the CollegeInsider.com Awards Banquet on April 3 in Indianapolis, site of the 2015 men's NCAA Basketball Championship.
