Report warns Toll Road dump stations pose risks

MUNSTER, IN (AP) - An annual report on the Indiana Toll Road recommends taking steps to prevent the unmonitored dumping of hazardous chemicals into closed sewage dump stations at travel plazas along the 157-mile highway.

The Times of Munster reports
reports the study prepared by URS Corp. covering the year ending June 30th found those dump stations to be a "high liability."

Indiana Toll Road Concession Co., which leases the road from the state in emails that concrete barriers had been placed around the dump stations to prevent use and the company would "consider any necessary additional steps." The report states drains at the stations should be permanently closed and consideration should be given to completely removing the dump stations.

The report is required by the agreement under which ITR leases the road.
