A special education teacher at Mt. Carmel High School pleads guilty to a lesser charge.

Kirby Cheesman was accused of having sexual relations with a 16-year-old student.

Cheesman pleaded guilty Thursday to criminal sexual abuse.  The original charge was aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

As part of the proposed sentence agreed upon by Cheesman's attorney and the State's attorney, Cheesman won't serve any jail time but she will have to register as a sex offender.

The judge also ordered Cheesman to undergo a sex offender evaluation.  She can't be sentenced until that evaluation is complete.

The sentencing hearing has been set for December 15. Cheesman is free on bond.

We are told the Board of Education will accept Cheesman's resignation at a meeting scheduled for Monday, November 10 at 7 p.m. at the District Office, 218 West 13th Street, Mt. Carmel.
