Vanderburgh Humane Society vies for national prize

VANDERBURGH CO., IN (WFIE) - The Vanderburgh Humane Society is getting ready to compete against shelters across America for $50,000 in prizes.

The four-week contest, sponsored by, is called the Shelter Showdown and uses online votes to determine the winners.

The shelter that receives the most votes will receive $25,000, followed by $15,000 for second place and $10,000 for third place.

The executive director of VHS says the money would help the shelter in many different ways.

VHS recently ordered a new automated phone system after spending weeks without one.

The money could also help with day to day expenses like vaccinations, medicines, food and utilities.

The electric, gas and water bills alone at the shelter can total almost $10,000 a month.

VHS is a non-profit organization that receives all its funds from donations.

The contest starts Wednesday at noon and ends November 19 at noon.

You can vote once every day at as soon as the contest opens.
