Kentucky's Senate candidates to debate on TV

LEXINGTON, KY (AP) -

The candidates in Kentucky's closely-watched U.S. Senate race will debate on statewide television Monday night for likely the only time before the Nov. 4 general election.

Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell and Democratic challenger Alison Lundergan Grimes will appear as guests on Kentucky Tonight, an interview show broadcast on Kentucky Educational Television. Host Bill Goodman will moderate the hour-long debate that begins at 8 p.m.

Grimes is trying to topple McConnell, a 30-year incumbent who is also the Senate minority leader. McConnell hopes to win re-election to a sixth term and, if Republicans take control of the Senate, become the new Senate majority leader.

Public polls show a close race with a little more than three weeks to go before the election.
