Taking a Stand: Employees with disabilities

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) - As the Chairperson of the Evansville-Vanderburgh County Advisory Board on Disability Services, I am guiding the Board's efforts to improve employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

Recent data shows we are more likely to live in poverty, our unemployment rate is double of those without a disability and agrayy area known as, "Underemployment;" defined as, not earning a sufficient income to support themselves or family, is estimated as high as 75% in Indiana.

I fall in this category, despite earning a Masters degree with a 3.9 GPA.

Common assumptions are that employees with disabilities will lower employer's production and profit margin.

The truth; employees with disabilities miss less work, increase productivity and retention and bring more surprising benefits to jobs.

This work ethic tends to rub off on coworkers without disabilities.

With October being "National Employment of People with Disabilities Awareness Month," I challenge Human Resource professionals to take a second, closer look at a potential employee with a disability.

If you need a testimony, the name of job placement agencies to find employees with disabilities or other general information, call the Board at the City/County Human Relations Commission office at 812-436-4927.

I am Rob Kerney taking a stand to improve employment for individuals with disabilities, will you stand with me?
