BLOOMINGTON, IN (AP) -

Authorities say two people have died in a crash of a small plane near Bloomington.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Joe Watts confirmed the fatalities in the crash Thursday afternoon north of the Monroe County Airport.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Tony Molinaro says the wreckage is burned so badly the type of plane and its tail number are unknown.

Monroe County Coroner Nicole Meyer told The Herald-Times that dental records or DNA will have to be used to identify the two victims.

The plane crashed in a wooded area, and Meyer says trees must be removed so investigators can access some of the wreckage.

Wanda Bennett told the newspaper she was mowing grass in the area when she heard "a pretty loud boom" and saw plumes of smoke.
