Couple's duet heard miles away from Louisville Zoo

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - It can be heard for miles - a bellowing from the Louisville Zoo. But it's not a lion or large animal making the sound. The animals causing all the noise are only about three feet tall.

Zoli and Sungai, a pair of Siamangs, are credited with singing the duets that fill the air. Now that they are becoming young adults, their duets are becoming a love songs.

"It's a long song. They sing, back and forth and together,” said the Louisville Zoo's Assistant Director Steven Taylor. "We think it helps cement the relationship of the pair and it also helps tell other Siamangs where they are."

Siamangs are small apes who live in the tree tops in South East, usually 100 feet from the ground.

Their call is hard to replicate.

"I've been in the business for 40 years and I'll still stop to listen," Taylor said.

But Zoli and Sungai aren't the only ones singing their hearts out. A third Siamang, named Zain, was also raised with them.

Zain attends training sessions at the zoo. The exercises help to keep him occupied until he finds a partner of his own to serenade.

Siamangs are endangered. In Malaysia, it is reported 3,400 of them die each year because of deforestation. To learn more about them, click here
