Vectren warns about a utility payment scam

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) - Vectren is issuing a warning about a phone scam.

They say a handful of businesses have been targeted over the past few days but none has fallen for it.

It starts with an unsolicited phone call from person who claims to be a Vectren representative.

The victim is warned that their service will be cut off within a half-hour if they don't make an immediate payment.

They are then told to buy a prepaid debit card from a local store and call back to make a payment.

When the victim calls back, they are asked to provide a receipt number and PIN for the debit card which gives the scammer access to the funds on the card.

If you should receive a call like this, you should call local law enforcement officials.

You can also use Vectren.com's live chat option or call 1-800-227-1376 to reach Vectren's contact center, which is open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
