VA hospital holds community mental health summit

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - In an effort to better serve the men and women who dedicated their lives to serving this country the Robley Rex VA Medical Center hosted a community mental health summit.

Community, government, political and healthcare organizations were on hand for the event at Hotel Louisville, 120 W. Broadway. The VA hopes by bringing these organizations together it can expand the mental health services currently being offered to local veterans.

"The purpose of today's event is to really bring out community partners, organizations who are working and serving our veterans and be able to create dialogue so they'll be able to take that back and be able to help veterans in this community, and family members as well," said Brittany Priddy of the Robley Rex VA Medical Center.

The numbers are troubling: veterans taking their lives at the rate of one an hour. Some say it's higher than that.

The VA says it is actively expanding mental health resources to meet the needs of veterans, but says through an alliance with these organizations it can work on the broad range of veterans' mental health needs.
