Suspect in West End Starbucks attack incompetent to stand trial

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

The man accused of brutally beating a Starbucks employee in the West End was expected to be in court Tuesday morning, but the court now says he is incompetent to stand trial.

Worku Asfaw Woldermariam faced multiple charges of malicious wounding.

The attack left the victim, 65-year-old Kathy Vinson, bruised and in a neck brace after she was kicked in the head multiple times. Family members say all she did was say "good morning" to Woldermariam when he began to attack her at the Starbucks.

There was also a manager in the store at the time. That manager was also injured, and according to police, Woldermariam kicked an officer as well.

Woldermariam is undergoing treatment at Central State Hospital and he is ordered to take his medication.  A status hearing has been scheduled for October 22.
