Simon Kenton HS postpones scrimmage at St. X over 'The Purge' threats

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Threats of random violence in Louisville tied to The Purge horror movies have caused Simon Kenton High School to move a varsity football scrimmage scheduled for tonight at St. Xavier High School to Saturday morning at Simon Kenton in Independence, Kentucky. That's according to the Director of Public information for Kenton County Public Schools.

Jessica Dykes said the school district made the decision because student safety is its number one concern.

"We had heard via social media about 'The Purge,' and we were in conversations with St. X all day and all morning," said Dykes. "Ultimately we made the decision based on what was best for our kids and the safety of the students."

The game will now be played Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Simon Kenton High School.

A photo that looks like a movie poster for The Purge and reads, "Louisville's The Purge" began circulating earlier in the week and spread like wildfire on social media. The photo states that "Louisville's The Purge" will last from 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 15 to 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16. In The Purge films, random violence begins after a siren sounds, and all crime, including murder, is legal for 12 hours.

Police agencies in Louisville, Clarksville and Jeffersonville and the FBI are aware of the threats and plan to take proactive measures. According to LMPD, the department will have a heightened presence on the streets of Louisville over the weekend.
