ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Trent Thompson, the No. 1 ranked high school football player in Georgia and a top 10 in the nation, announced he will attend the University of Georgia at a news conference Tuesday night. He said the choice was made during Dawg Night this summer.

"It was the first school to offer me, the first school I visited, the first coach that really showed me some love," Thompson said.

The Class of 2015 defensive tackle is hoping that his pledge will bring others along.

"I mean, if I go to Georgia, I can change their program around," Thompson said. "I'm trying to do a lot of recruiting, trying to get more linebackers. The defensive linemen really want to play next to me and everybody want to play behind me make sure I get pressure to the quarterback, make sure they get picks, interceptions and lots of tackles."

He chose from final schools Georgia, Alabama, Auburn, and University of Southern California. Thompson was ranked in the top 10 in three major recruiting rankings – No. 3 by Yahoo Rivals, No. 6 in the ESPN 300, and No. 7 by247Sports.com.

He led Westover's Patriots to their first region title in 2013.
