Sales down at the box office

Posted: Updated:
SAN DIEGO, CA (WFIE) -

Box office sales are down this year nearly 20 percent.

It's a drastic change compared to the record-breaking year in 2013.

Some experts blame the quality of the movies, others blame the price of the ticket.

In San Diego, one theater is offering certain movie tickets for only a dollar in hopes to boost attendance.

But no theater can survive charging a dollar for first-run movies and that has theater owners worried.

"Average ticket price is about 13 dollars, so we really have taken a risk in lowering our prices but it's working," said Julie Bravo, Ultrastar Cinemas.

Ultrastar charges a dollar a ticket for its morning children's movie, but charges 8 dollars for a regular, first-run movie.. still cheaper than many of its competitors.
