SIMPSONVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Opening weekend at the new Outlet Shoppes in Simpsonville wrapped up on a high note.

"We were really pleased with how it turned out," Marketing Director Lucy George said.

The mall counted more than 60,000 people and about 30,000 cars in its parking lot Saturday and Sunday.

The hustle and bustle finally became reality. Construction on the $80 million project and almost 400,000 square foot development began a little more than a year ago. Some worried about the plans, traffic and even the fish that had to be shocked and moved from a pond.

Then came the job fairs; 1,000 positions needed to be filled. By March 2014, 95 percent of the mall had already been leased. Then it was a countdown. The grand opening last Thursday was anything but quiet.

Shoppers flocked to the outlets, waited in line hoping for deals before heading back to school. Some were especially in search of the stores that weren't nearby before.

“I really like J. Crew and we don't have one of those in Louisville," one shopper said.

Retailers were also happy this weekend, the mall's spokesperson said. They are waiting to find out how they did thanks to all the bargain shoppers.

Some did say they were stuck in traffic as they tried to enter the mall, but Kentucky State Police and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department reported no major traffic problems Sunday.
