Gladstone police search for 2 suspects after teen fatally shot

GLADSTONE, MO (KCTV) -

Authorities in Gladstone are searching for two suspects after a 19-year-old man was fatally shot.

Police sectioned off the Bluffs Apartments at 70th Street and Indiana Avenue at 9:44 p.m. Monday with crime tape.

Resident Dakota Rapp said she couldn't believe what was going on. She ran outside to ask an officer what was going on, and she said police told her to go back inside and lock her doors and windows for safety.

"We saw three police officers with their guns drawn run into that building over there," apartment resident Heather Swierski said.

Other residents were rattled as a police helicopter flew overhead and a canine unit searched the area for the suspected gunmen.

"I was left wondering because nothing like that ever happens here. So I didn't know what was going on. I could only imagine the worst, but I didn't want to think the worst," Rapp said.

Authorities said on Wednesday that the man killed was Marc Bogart.

According to Gladstone police, officers were called to the 6900 block of North Bales Street on a report of a shooting.

"Upon arrival, officers found a 19-year-old male in the back seat of a vehicle suffering from a gunshot wounds," according to the news release from the police.

Officers tried to perform life-saving measures. Paramedics rushed Bogart to North Kansas City Hospital where he would die from his injuries.

A neighbor said she didn't think the man lived there but that he had been visiting someone in the complex.

"I was done in myself to see a 19-year-old kid," apartment resident Mel Wilson said. "This never happens in Gladstone."

Police have not released a detailed description of the two suspects seen running eastbound from the crime scene.

The crime has alarmed residents.

"It's definitely alarming," said Matlin Eubanks. "I didn't think anything like that would happen here."

The Kansas City Police Department is assisting Gladstone police in the investigation. The Clay County Sheriff's Office provided a deputy and canine unit. Other law enforcement agencies are also assisting.

Anyone with information is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS or the Gladstone Police Department at 816-436-3550.

Gladstone police said they haven't had a homicide in their city for at least a year.

Last year, 52-year-old Nancy Bowman was found dead in the woods behind her apartments. She had been stabbed to death.

In 2012, Kevin Mashburn, a technician for AT&T, was killed during a robbery while he was working in a Gladstone neighborhood. Bryan Middlemas was charged with first-degree murder and other charges. He is set to go on trial in the fall. Jurors from Greene County will hear the case.

Also in 2012, Gladstone psychiatrist Irina Puscariu died when she was shot in the face, allegedly by the wife of an Air Force colonel that Puscariu was having an affair with. Shannon O'Roark Griffin is set to go on trial in September.
