SPENCER CO., IN (WFIE) -

Two people are sent to the hospital in critical condition after a head-on crash in Spencer County.

Indiana State Police says it happened around 7:30 Friday morning on State Road 66, just east of Hatfield near County Road 800 West.

ISP says 19-year-old Colton Claspell, of Newburgh, was driving an SUV east on State Road 66, when, for an unknown reason, he crossed the center line.

Troopers say Claspell drove across the westbound lane, struck two mailboxes, and then drove along a corn field before driving head-on into a minivan, driven by 66-year-old William Boehman, of Maceo, KY.

ISP says the impact from the crash pushed the minivan into a driveway on the south side of the roadway and caused Claspell's SUV turn over onto the driver's side.

Troopers say Claspell and Boehman were both airlifted from the scene and taken to St. Mary's Hospital in Evansville with critical injuries.

SR 66 was closed near Luce Elementary while crews worked the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.
