Jehovah's Witness convention brings business to Evansville

Posted: Updated:

Thousands of worshippers gather in downtown Evansville for the annual Jehovah's Witness Summer Convention at the Ford Center.

This is the 11th year that the city has hosted the convention and officials estimate more than 6,000 visitors will attend each weekend.

Over the years organizers have seen the conference grow and now it draws in visitors from six surrounding states.

For that reason convention officials have extended the conference from two to three weekends and that means big business for the city.

"These are people that stay in the hotels, eat in our restaurants, have to gas up their cars, so the 2 weekends are always a plus, but a third weekend is a real bonus," says Laura Libs with eh Evansville Convention and Visitors Bureau. "We normally anticipate about $3.5 million for the two weekends, so this is going to boost it up close to $5 million for the three consecutive weekends."

The conference begins at The Ford Center Friday morning at 9:00.

The events are open to the public.
