Many in the community said goodbye Monday to Danny Simons.
Simons was a leader in establishing several volunteer fire departments in Hopkins County and worked in the fire service for over 30 years.
Simons recently lost his battle with multiple-sclerosis, a disease he had been battling for over a decade.
"He made a big difference in getting all the fire departments off the ground and getting them going. We are what we are today because of people like him," said Madisonville Fire Chief Steve Stoltz.
Firefighter Kevin Cotton said, "There's both volunteer firefighters, that are firefighters because of Danny Simons. And career firefighters because of Danny Simons."
Danny's legacy continues on in the fire industry with his son.
