BULLITT COUNTY, KY (WAVE) - If you're looking for beer or liquor on Sunday, you can find it in restaurants in Shepherdsville, Mount Washington and Hillview, but nowhere else in Bullitt County.
Rick Clark Jr., owner of Little Rick’s Neighborhood Bar and Grill in Lebanon Junction, wants to change that.
Clark says Wednesdays at his restaurant feature trivia, on Fridays there’s karaoke and dancing, but on Sundays Little Rick’s is all grill. When patrons find out they cannot get alcohol on Sundays, Clark said, they “just ride five minutes up the road and get beer and food there.” Last Sunday he counted 12 groups of people who left to eat elsewhere.
Though other cities in Bullitt County allow some alcohol sales on Sunday, under Kentucky law, Lebanon Junction is too small to decide for itself. That leaves things up to Bullitt County Fiscal Court, and makes things a lot more complicated.
Magistrate Bob Hunt said, “If we pass an ordinance it has to go through the whole county and not just Lebanon Junction.”
Hunt says he could see allowing restaurants to serve alcohol until 6 p.m., but Clark says that leaves him with little more than a late lunch and early supper crowd. After paying premiums to pipe in all the sports channels, Clark would like to be able to serve alcohol during football games on Sunday.
Three votes on Tuesday could change the rules for Clark and others, but one magistrate is a minister who has already said Sundays should be reserved for church.
As for Hunt, he sees both sides. “I'm not sure exactly which way I'll go on this yet,” he said, “but Tuesday's a long way off.”
