INDIANAPOLIS, IN (WFIE) -

Indiana Governor Mike Pence says a slain Indianapolis police officer was a hero in everyday life, not just his work.

Pence spoke Friday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse where thousands of police officers and spectators attended the funeral for 51-year-old Officer Perry Renn.

Officials say Renn died Saturday night after being shot three times by a man armed with an AK-47 assault rifle.

But Pence says heroes are not only defined by moments of crisis, but by simple things like helping their neighbors. He says that's the kind of man Renn was.

The crowd listened respectfully as the governor spoke.

Outside, at least 1,000 squad cars from throughout Indiana and other states lined up on nearby streets to take part in a planned 11-mile funeral procession.
